Rosalie Bay Resort, Dominica
What It Takes To Be Green

How does Rosalie Bay Resort in Dominica differ from all the other so-called "green" resorts?

Too many resorts claim to be "green" (the new buzz word for sustainable tourism) if they simply recycle everything, use light bulbs, use energy star appliances and seal or insulate their windows, ceilings and walls. Some seem to be "green" simply because of the rich foliage around them.

None of that is truly being "green." Most of those practices are about cutting the resort's own energy costs, looking good and perhaps even making money from all its recycled materials.

Rosalie Bay Resort in Dominica was built green from the ground up. As Manager Ken Watson explains, Rosalie Bay Resort can rightfully claim the green title because:

* A wind turbine and solar panels will furnish 90% of the resort's energy

* All of the resort's water comes from mountain springs and purified, not pumped from the ground

* Outdoor patio furniture is made from recycled plastic

* The resorts signs are made from fallen trees

* Most fruits and vegetables are organic and locally grown

"It costs between a third and forty percent more really to go green," Watson says. "But the resort's owner was committed to doing it and doing it right."

The easiest way to reach the resort is flying into Dominica at the Melville Hall Airport, closest airport to the resort, about a 50 minute drive. Rental cars are available at the airport or at the resort.

The drive to the resort goes through Dominica's famed Carib Territory, also one of Dominica's most scenic areas.
