St. Barts Landmarks
Hotel de Gouvernement

Historically, the Hotel de Gouvernement is one of St. Barts most important structures. It was here on March 16, 1878, that the retrocession of St. Barts to France was signed.

Retrocession is the voluntary act of returning property, previously relinquished, to its original holders.

In this case, France bought back St Barts, which Gustav III of Sweden had swapped with  with Louis XIV of France for warehouse space in the Swedish port of Gothenburg on the North Sea.

After this stop, follow Rue du Roi Oscar ( King Oscar II Street) to its end. Then go right and turn left almost immediately onto Rue Gambetta.
