Trinidad Carnival for Tourists
Some often asked questions about attending Carnival.
How Safe Is Carnival?
For tourists, it generally is a safer celebration than the only other
comparable spectacle, Rio at Carnival time.
Compared to Mardi Gras, Trinidad Carnival is done with more class, not with a lot of barfing and unruly conduct that
has come to characterize the New Orleans event.
As for racism, it does exist between Trinidadians of African and Indian ancestry. This is rarely directed at visitors.
Considering that Trinidad is a melting pot of races, it is uncommon to encounter any situation based on black vs white.
That said, party smart. Nowhere is guaranteed completely safe and is totally without crime. Tourists who get into trouble are usually ones who left their brain back in their hotel room.
As long as you party responsibly with a group of friends, Carnival should be a safe, fun time. On the other hand, periods outside of Carnival may pose more risk, according to the U.S. State Department.
Can I Take Part in the Carnival Parade?
Yes, if you buy your own Carnival costume at a Mas Camp and get permission to join that group as they stroll through the streets.
What else is there to do after Carnival?
There's plenty to do, so much you need to go to the next page to find out.
