Hiking Biking Trinidad's network of old oilfield roads and hiking paths provide a varied terrain for cycling. Bird Watching With tropical savannah, rainforest, woodlands and mangrove swamp, Trinidad is a paradise for lovers of diverse bird life. More than 430 bird species, from the elusive Speckled Tanager to the spectacular Scarlet Ibis can be spotted on the island. The Asa Wright Nature Center is a reliable place to see birds, particulary hummingbirds, anytime of year. The scarlet ibis, Trinidad's national bird, roosts in the Caroni Sanctuary. Cave Exploration Trinidad has several good cave systems. In the Northern Mountain Range are the Aripo Caves, Trinidad's largest accessible cave system and home to a colony of nocturnal oilbirds. Hashing Here's one sport you may have never heard of. Hash runs are non-competitive 'hare and hounds' outings of about 4 miles, including loops, false trails and short cuts to ensure that runners of all abilities can take part. In a hash, the participants run or walk at their own pace, at their own risk. Anyone not pleased with the trail can return to the starting point. There is no embarrassment if anyone cuts their hash for any reason. At end, hashers experience an intensive 'recovery' session by consuming large quantities of beer and rum to recover from all the positive benefits provided by running and walking. See hashing schedules at Outdoors Trinidad whose words were adapted for here. Kayaking Kayakers can choose to contend with large waves, ocean swells or unpredictable sea currents. Chaguaramas, on the western peninsula, and Godineau River in south Trinidad are popular kayaking sites. Turtle Watching During the months May to September, five species of sea turtles nest on the sandy beaches of Trinidad's northeast coast. The turtles include the leatherback, loggerhead, green, hawksbill and olive ridley.
