In terms of the number of hurricanes, some years definitely are better (and worse) than others Forecasts for for the number of tropical storms for each hurricane season are fairly good indicators how active a particular season will be. Unfortuantely, the predictions can't forsee the severity or strength of those storms. Hurricane Andrew, which struck South Florida in 1992 and caused an estimated $26 billion in damage (US$41 billion in today's dollars) occured during a relatively inactive hurricane season.
