A step back in time, in many ways

Copan Ruinas is the name not only of the archaeological park but also a small cobblestone and whitewashed village less than a mile away.

Both are located 105 miles north of San Pedro
Sula, the nearest travel hub, about a 2.5-hour drive away.

It's easy to reach Copan Ruinas via the air- conditioned, express Hedman Alas bus (which shows American movies with Spanish subtitles) from San Pedro Sula; call 504/553-1361.

Once here, you don't need to rent a car or take a taxi to visit the archeological site because you can walk to the ruins from a hotel in the village.

For organized tours to Copan, contact MC Tours which also arranges horseback riding, nature hikes and bird watching, all popular Copan area activities.

Call 504/651-4454; Web site www.mctours-honduras.com

This is not a place to come for just a quick daytrip. Plan on spending at least 2 nights, if not more.

Coming to this cool mountain region after a visit to the Bay Islands, I hated to leave.
