Roatan, most famous of the Bay Islands

Mountainous Roatan is the largest and most visited of the Bay Islands. At 40 miles long, it is surrounded by a reef system that is part of the world's second largest.

West End and West Bay contain many of the resorts although some, like Anthony's Key, enjoy an island of their own.

One of the most popular Roatan experiences is snorkeling with dolphins, a 15-minute hands-on session that includes the assistance of the animal's trainer.

Less well known is the Iguana Hideout near French Harbour, a residential development that's become a sanctuary to hundreds of green iguanas.

The animals were in severe decline due to hunting and land clearing until two brothers began protecting the iguanas. Now the population thrives.
